5/17/10

Winter arrived today! After months of heat we were all ill-prepared. After all, it shouldn't really arrive until June! I suppose it wasn't cold by some standards, just sixteen degrees celcius, but I, for one, really suffered! The morning wasn't too bad. We had our Committee Meeting and we were in a corner of a cosy restaurant. Our Secretary was still on holiday so I had to take the minutes. I must write them up immediately, as I forget what I've meant by various bits of scribble if I don't do them straight away. This afternoon was distinctly chilly, though! We were up at Lois' house for a choir practice and it was freezing!

Our Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, is climbing up the popularity ladder at the moment. Kevin Rudd has made several big blunders and people are openly asking whether Australia is ready for a female Premier. I don't quite know how I feel about it. I don't want to favour a woman just because she's a woman, but she certainly seems to have her wits about her and she speaks eloquently and with self-assurance. However, I think it's ridiculous to want change after a short time. Politicians should be given enough time to prove themselves or hang themselves. Poor old Obama is no longer on a pedestal, either. And, once again I ponder on the drawbacks of Democracy.

  1. It promises to be a great week here in the Great White North with everyday going well into the 20s. It's still chilly so far this morning though at 8°C.

  2. The Brits were right about keeping their currency, so let us hope the new Prime Minister is right about requiring a 5 year term of office. First year terms of office have to be a learning time for any new minister or president in any country. However, I do object to the suggestion that women are not able to run a country despite your statement that you are not discriminating. If she has a documented track record, and if she is eloquent, that is what the electorate should be looking at. I believe there are a number of countries that would prefer women to take on responsibilities nowadays because
somehow men cannot steer into new ways of governing. They are trapped into the bad old histories of their own making.

  3. It may well be that Australians are ready for a female Premier, but it's never yet been put to the test.

  4. Ability needs to triumph tradition.

  5. The problem for Obama is that there is a notorious extremest opposition party that is only just being recognized (and openly criticized) by the press as an entity that has harmed the idea of democracy for decades. Paul Kruger, Economist (Nobel Prize winner), who writes Opinion for the NY Times on Mondays and Fridays, is the man to read on the subject of the economy, world wide, and Obama. In fact, I understand that those who look for the 'truth' of matters read him, including Obama. Kruger always makes sense to me. The mentality of the opposition, given to lying, is now becoming remarkably transparent as the press, no longer intimidated by the the 'far right' element of the party, is able to address the issues up front.

  7. Oh I so agree Brenda. So many people just don't understand the actual time that it takes to make a true difference. So many people truly believe that when an official is elected in, things will change overnight.
This can also lead to many misconceptions about who actually messed up the government to begin with because they don't actually have any concept of how long it takes for things to affect what goes on today.
So many officials may get a bad rap simply because they weren't able to clean someone elses mess up quick enough!
It can be oh so confusing and frustrating, much like my comment! LOL!
Thank you for stopping by my blog. It is journalistic with a bit of mish mash thrown in! Love Di ♥

  9. I must look-up Paul Kruger, Margaret. The 'outsiders' sometimes speak more sense, politically, than do the politicians!
